I read yesterday about the funding the government is allotting for the Opioid Epidemic in America.  ‘Congress recently approved $6 billion in federal funding over the next two years to tackle the nations rising opioid addiction and they are pushing for another $13 billion in funding as overdose rates rise.’  The focus seemed to be on the future, death penalties for dealers and the “Wall”.  There was absolutely no mention of expanding treatment facilities for our addicts who ALREADY HAVE A DEATH SENTENCE  due to the lack of available treatment centers.

‘…our addicts ALREADY HAVE A DEATH SENTENCE due to the lack of available treatment centers’

On Long Island where I live, I believe there are only a handful of Sober Houses, Rehabs and Detox Facilities which are even harder to find.  Don’t get me wrong, I have a grandchild, another on the way so one of my concerns is for the future. But,  ‘The plan also calls for stricter sentencing standards for drug dealers, cutting opioid prescriptions by one-third within three years, and funding the anti-drug education campaigns.’ According to Long Islands Newsday paper, ‘Trump called for “spending a lot of money on great commercials” as part of an anti-drug campaign aimed at children that would “scare them from ending up like the people in the commercials.”  Well, Mr. President, those “People” you speak of are dying and suffering now and will continue to if we can’t treat them.  “If this administration wants to save lives, it needs to drop its obsession with killing and locking people up, and instead focus resources on what work, harm-reduction strategies and access to evidence-based treatment and prevention,” said Maria McFarland Sanchez-Moreno, executive director the Drug Policy Alliance, a Washington-based nonprofit that promotes ‘health-centered’ drug policies.  There is NOT ONE WORD aimed at treatment in the government’s plan, NOT ONE WORD!
